WHAT A RELIEF
Words and music by Eric Wrobbel
Description from
How does one take Eric Wrobbel's songs seriously when tunes like this one, "What a Relief," are in the catalog? Sure, it exhibits craft, and is mildly clever, but it is basically a joke--or what might have been described in another era as a "novelty song."
And the answer is...
You can't. You can't take his songs seriously. To do so is to miss the point entirely. How you CAN take his songs is this: sincerely. They are sincere rather than serious. And that leaves room for the wide range of material in his catalog from the comical to the (yes) serious. There is a certain integrity to the catalog that can only really be seen and understood when it is 'taken sincerely' rather than 'taken seriously.'
